LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

“Are you the modern city-chic bride? Earthy and adventurous? Maybe you are romantic, think running on the beach like you’re in a rom-com, or steamy and ethereal walking in the forest. Whomever you are, your save-the-date and wedding-website photos showcase your personality as a couple and set the tone for the wedding.”

TIMING IS EVERYTHING

“This is the most crucial part of getting amazing photos! The best light happens around sunrise and sunset. When photographers refer to golden hour, or you see warm, romantic images on Pinterest, they are likely taken during the hour before sunset. The light is even and flattering during this time of day, whereas midday can be harsh during the summer months, and in the winter, expect clouds and rain.”

SEASONS CHANGE

“Let’s be honest, as awesome as the Pacific Northwest is, the weather can be unpredictable, wet, foggy and grey. The time of year will make a difference in how your photos look. If your wedding is happening in the fall and you want the same feel and color palettes for your engagement session, then shoot in October. If you want to run carefree in a pretty dress around the city, then summer months are the best bet. The mountains are a stunning backdrop: In November, you have snow; whereas in July, it’s all about the wildflowers.”

GLAM SQUAD

“If you don’t do makeup and hair that often, having a professional is great. In photographs, more is sometimes good, as subtle doesn’t show up as it does in person. This is a great time to try out looks or makeup artists you may want for the big day. And always get a manicure and ensure your hands look well-kept. In engagement sessions, your ring is a focal point, and close-up shots will show that chipped nail!”

VIBES MATTER

“Your engagement photos should help tell your love story. Think about what you like to do together. Where do you like to go to spend time together? Where did you meet? What is your wedding vibe? These elements set the groundwork for telling your story in an artistic and authentic way. It is so much more meaningful to design your session with this in mind. I always want my clients’ sessions to feel like a date: exciting, fun and romantic.”

DRESS TO IMPRESS

“What you wear can and will elevate your shoot and can even complement the wedding aesthetic. Some couples choose to incorporate their wedding colors into their outfits. The best route is to go with something tried-and-true: clothes that move with you and hug in all the right places. You can go glam, or if authentic photos are what you want, then show up as your everyday self. Rule of thumb: Choose to complement or contrast with your location. If in doubt, aim for neutral, earthy tones. I love a mix of textures rather than patterns.”
