Mayumi Matsuno & Bret Reckard

Married and celebrated: Metropolist in SoDo

Date: June 25, 2016

THE PROPOSAL: When Bret Reckard planned a romantic getaway proposal in the Santa Cruz Mountains for Mayumi Matsuno’s birthday, he never could have anticipated that the vacation rental would fall through. Turning back home, Bret acted quickly, suggesting a sunset walk along Mayumi’s favorite running trail, where he got down on bended knee.

FUN FAMILY FACTS: Even though the couple resides in San Francisco, their hearts were set on a wedding in Seattle, where Mayumi grew up. The mother of the bride, Uwajimaya CEO Tomoko Moriguchi-Matsuno, helped with the planning, insisting on a fun-filled wedding that included the Japanese tradition of breaking a barrel and a traditional sake toast.

THE DESIGN: Both Bret and Mayumi loved that Metropolist had beautiful bones that they could build onto. From the exquisite 8-foot-diameter floral wreath and chandelier installation, which hung from the venue’s historic crane apparatus, to the dramatic silk drapery that separated the cocktail hour from the dining area, the decor was perfectly matched to the industrial space.

THE FOOD: The dessert bar included a delightful spread of yuzu-lemon tarts, chocolate-lime tarts and raspberry macarons. And for a late-night snack, guests dined on chicken and waffles and sliders before saying their good-byes.
