Chris Grammens, 33, and Stephanie Clarke, 32, first met on Match.com, hitting it off immediately after quickly realizing their shared love for artisan craftsmanship: Stephanie owns Dahlia Press Letterpress & Design Co., and Chris is an avid home brewer outside of his job as an architect at LMN Architects. The couple dated for two and half years before Chris proposed on a trip to Alaska, where Stephanie is from originally. When it came to planning a wedding, the couple knew they wanted an intimate Prohibition-inspired affair packed with vintage elements in one of their favorite bars, Capitol Hill’s Canon. In keeping with their love for the 1920s era and jazz music, some of the first dates Chris took Stephanie on were to small speakeasy-themed restaurants and bars. They even took their first trip together to San Francisco for Cocktail Week so they could learn from some of the best. The couple had been to Canon a number of times before to admire the many personal touches and details, like how the bar top is stained with aromatic bitters and how the front is covered with pages from Canon owner Jamie Boudreau’s favorite cocktail book. They also appreciated the bar’s architectural elements, such as the tin ceiling and the extensive bottle collection. They felt the space has that lived-in, comfortable feeling, the type of place you’d want to spend time in, and perfect for a wedding hosting a total of 35 guests. To make it feel even more like a speakeasy, a good friend played doorman, accepting passwords as guests arrived.
